Gentle, Professional Pet Dentistry at Etowah Animal Hospital

Healthy teeth and gums are essential to your pet’s overall well-being. At Etowah Animal Hospital, we take dental care seriously, because we know how much it impacts your pet’s comfort, happiness, and long-term health.

Just like people, pets need regular dental checkups and cleanings to prevent pain, infection, and disease. Since pets can’t tell us when something hurts, it’s up to us to keep an eye on their oral health and catch problems before they become serious.

Why Dental Care Matters

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues seen in dogs and cats, and it’s also one of the most preventable. Poor oral health can cause much more than bad breath. It can lead to pain, difficulty eating, and even affect vital organs. This can lead to serious health conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver issues
  • Weight loss due to difficulty eating
  • Chronic pain and inflammation

Regular dental exams and cleanings help prevent these complications and keep your pets feeling their best.

What to Expect During a Dental Procedure

At Etowah Animal Hospital, we use advanced technology and compassionate care to ensure your pet’s dental procedure is as safe and comfortable as possible.

  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork to evaluate organ function and ensure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia.
  • Full-mouth dental radiographs (X-rays) to identify issues below the gumline that aren’t visible to the naked eye—such as bone loss, abscesses, or fractured roots.
  • Local dental anesthetic blocks to numb specific areas of the mouth for pain-free treatment.
  • Comprehensive pain management, including injections during the procedure and take-home medication as needed.

Depending on your pet’s needs, we can provide additional dental care:

  • Removal of diseased or damaged teeth
  • Gum suturing to promote healing
  • Full-mouth extractions for severe cases of dental disease

Our team will always discuss your pet’s dental X-rays, findings, and treatment plan with you, so you know exactly what’s going on and what to expect after the procedure.

Aftercare and Pain Management

Your pet’s comfort is our priority, before, during, and after any dental procedure. In addition to local anesthetic blocks, we administer a pain injection at the time of surgery and may prescribe several days of take-home pain medication to ensure your pet recovers comfortably.

We’ll also provide detailed at-home care instructions to help your pet heal smoothly and maintain a healthy mouth.

Preventive Dental Care at Home

The best dental care doesn’t stop after a cleaning. It’s an ongoing commitment. Our veterinary team can recommend ways to support your pet’s dental health at home, including daily tooth brushing, dental diets, or approved chews that help reduce plaque and tartar buildup.

Keep Your Pet’s Smile Healthy

At Etowah Animal Hospital, we believe prevention is the key to lifelong health. Regular dental exams, professional cleanings, and at-home care all play a vital role in keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy and can prevent painful problems before they start.
