Our Surgical Process: Safety and Comfort First

Every surgery at Etowah Animal Hospital begins with a thorough consultation and personalized care plan. We’ll answer all your questions, explain the procedure, and review pre-surgical requirements to make sure you feel comfortable and confident.

Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your pet’s procedure:

  • Pre-Anesthetic Bloodwork: Every patient undergoes blood testing to ensure their organs are functioning well and anesthesia can be administered safely.
  • IV Catheter and Fluids: Most pets will have an IV catheter placed for the administration of fluids, which helps maintain blood pressure and hydration throughout surgery.
  • Anesthesia and Monitoring:
    • A tailored combination of premedications helps your pet relax and manage pain.
    • An injectable induction agent is used, followed by placement of an endotracheal tube to maintain oxygen and inhalant anesthesia.
    • Vital signs—including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels (SpO₂), respiratory rate, and temperature—are continuously monitored throughout the procedure.
  • Pain Management: Every patient receives injectable pain relief before surgery and additional take-home medications to ensure a smooth, comfortable recovery.
  • Warm, Stress-Free Recovery:
    • Pets recover in a warmed Casco WellKennel, featuring climate control and glass enclosures that reduce stress and support optimal recovery.
    • Cats can relax with a view from a cozy bay window, helping them stay calm and at ease.
  • Protective Post-Surgical Care: Pets go home with an e-collar, surgical suit, or both when needed to protect their incision site and promote safe healing.

Compassionate Recovery Care

We know that surgery can be stressful for both pets and their owners, which is why we make your pet’s comfort and emotional well-being a priority. Our team handles every patient with kindness and patience, and our facility is designed to minimize fear and anxiety.

During recovery, your pet is carefully observed until they are fully awake and stable. We’ll provide you with detailed home-care instructions and remain available for any questions that arise after your pet goes home.
